In the BESTS Program, students work in interdisciplinary and cross-cultural teams to develop SDG-driven business solutions that apply circular economy principles to address real-world environmental and societal challenges. Each team progresses through the full innovation cycle, from problem identification to prototype development and business model formulation.
Students select a thematic focus aligned with circular city development and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including:
Clean energy and energy efficiency (e.g., waste-to-energy systems);
Carbon-neutral production and industrial processes;
Sustainable agriculture and food systems;
Circular food supply chains;
Sustainable fashion and textiles;
Sustainable packaging solutions;
Sustainable tourism; and
Management of chemical, medical, and hazardous waste.
Each group is supported by a dedicated mentor, who guides students in refining their ideas, integrating technical and business perspectives, and ensuring alignment with circular economy and SDG objectives.
In Stage 1, selected Indonesian students will participate in an immersive experience at the Institute of Science Tokyo, gaining first-hand exposure to Japan’s advanced sustainability practices, circular economy implementation, and technological innovation. This experience provides a strong conceptual foundation, enabling participants to critically reflect on how these approaches can inform and inspire solutions within the Indonesian context.
Note: Not all participants from Indonesia will be sent to Japan. Other participants will join the first stage online.
In Stage 2, the program deepens its experiential learning through engagement with industry, government, and community stakeholders across multiple locations in Indonesia, including Jakarta and Bandung. Bandung, known for its strong creative economy and academic ecosystem, provides a complementary context for understanding sustainability challenges and community-driven innovation. Through field-based activities, including a social experiment, students conduct observations, interviews, and public surveys to analyze societal perceptions and behaviors related to sustainability.
At the end of this stage, each team delivers a final pitch presentation of their business idea or prototype before a panel of judges from academia, industry, and non-governmental organizations (NGOs), providing professional feedback and real-world evaluation.
In Stage 3, the program emphasizes reflection and evaluation. Students consolidate their learning through an individual analytical essay that links their innovation projects to SDG impact, alongside a reflective evaluation of their learning experience. These outputs ensure that students not only develop solutions, but also critically assess their effectiveness, relevance, and potential for real-world implementation.
You will earn a 3-credit-hours course and a certificate from both Sampoerna University and Institute of Science Tokyo after you finished this program.
