A student exchange program between Sampoerna University and Institute of Science Tokyo

BESTS is a recurring student exchange program between Sampoerna University, Jakarta, Indonesia and Institute of Science Tokyo, Japan. It equips students with the knowledge and skills to develop entrepreneurial solutions for a circular city based on the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Through a problem-based learning approach, students will learn about circular economy principles and their application in real-world business scenarios. The program culminates in the creation of product, service prototypes tackling specific challenges within a circular city framework. The output of the program is business prototypes from the students to realize circular economy vision.
The aims of BESTS are:
students understand about entrepreneurship and circular economy;
students understand about ethics issues in circular economy;
students understand how to design a product from recycled materials;
students generate business ideas to realize circular economy; and
students expand their knowledge related to cultural and social differences and similarities.
The program will be implemented in three stages: Stage 1 will be conducted in 1 week by asynchronous class, Stage 2 be done in Jakarta for 16 consecutive days, and Stage 3 will be carried out by online session for 2 weeks.
During the program, students will work in a group on business ideas that implement circular economy that may solve environmental or social problems around the community. Each of the groups will be assisted by one teaching assistant (mentor) that will help the students in achieving their goals.

Students will be instructed by 17 experienced instructors from several backgrounds, including academics, governmental organizations, and industries. Students can learn from their experiences in designing the ideas, doing feasibility studies, creating financial strategies, and improving their business communication.
